Random thoughts #1

Series of random things I found pretty interesting this past week. Mostly a reminder to myself with the links quickly available for later reference.

I listened to the Joe Walker podcast with a nice long interview to Nassim Taleb. Everyone should read The Black Swan by N. Taleb.

Extreme weather events are all over the news these days. From the storm Boris in central Europe to the Helene hurricane in the US as well as increased rain over continental Denmark. There was an excellent discussion on recent weather extremes in the extreme weather congress. The talks are online (in German) in youtube. Plus we might be getting some of the effects of hurricane Kirk next week in Europe! I will probably be working on the topic of model verification of extreme events sometime next year, so I am starting to look into the scientific literature at the moment.

News from the data-driven weather modelling front: last week NASA open-sourced a new foundation model for weather and climate called Prithvi WxC. According to the authors, the model can be used beyond weather forecasting, with applications ranging from weather and climate downscaling to the the assessment of extreme weather events like hurricanes. They also claim the model can be used both at global and regional scales.
